Nestled in the mountains, adjacent to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, you will find Hotel Belmar just moments away from the wilderness of an immense tropical rain forest and Monteverde“s main attractions. Monteverde was originally inhabited by a few Costa Rican families that lived off agriculture and cattle farms. For a long time these families were almost isolated from the rest of the country due to the very difficult access of the area. In the 1950s during the Korean War a group of Quakers in the United States (a pacifist, religious group known as the "Friends") were put in jail for refusing to enlist in the draft. This made a part of the community decide to migrate to Costa Rica whose lack of army and peaceful policies matched their own philosophies. After searching around Costa Rica they found in Monteverde fertile, quiet and due to the isolation and cheap lands to make an fulfilling living.
